Tetanus is a very serious disease, and can occur at any age.
The newborn baby can get it if not born in a clean place, and if the umbilical cord is not cut with a sterile knife or scissors.
The disease occurs later through injuries, cuts and bruises when germs of tetanus enter the wound from the dirt and mud.
The whole body becomes stiff and the back becomes arched like a bow.
The jaw becomes stiff and the child cannot chew or swallow. Later, there are spasms and convulsions.
Children keep falling constantly while playing and scrape their elbows and knees often. So their protection against tetanus is important. This can be done by giving them DPT injections.
Tetanus in the newborn baby can be prevented by giving injections of tetanus toxoid to the mother during pregnancy, and ensuring delivery in a clean and hygienic environment.
