Child diseases and conditions

Mongolism, also called as Down’s syndrome, is a kind of mental retardation.
The child’s face is mongoloid even at birth, and the parents can usually make out that the child’s face is different from that of other children.

Mongolism is due to an abnormality in the genes or chromosomes and tends to occur in babies of older mothers.
The degree of mental retardation varies, but they are all subnormal and need special training for their rehabilitation.
The parents should seek genetic counselling from their doctor, as mongolism tends to recur in a future pregnancy.
