Cavities or Caries
Caries needs attention at all ages, and is very common even in small children. Some believe that the temporary teeth are going to drop off and so do not need any attention for caries. This is wrong. Because caries can lead to infection and pain, as well as cause infection of the permanent unerupted teeth. Therefore, consulting a dentist is necessary.
The cause of caries is not very clear but sweets seem to encourage them. Harmless germs which are in the mouth, multiply rapidly because of the sugar in the sweets, and these gradually destroy the hard, covering enamel of the teeth, and a cavity forms which gradually enlarges.
The food particles, what we eat get into this cavity and increase the process of infection and destruction. So donít encourage the child to eat sweets and rinse the childís mouth after he has eaten them. And also, the mouth after meals is very important.
Fruits such as apples, pears or oranges are very good cleansing agents and it is a good habit to end a meal with a fruit.
